May Day, May 1st, is commemorated throughout the world as International Workers’ Day demanding justice, fairness and dignity for all. While workers globally observing International May Day, thousands of workers of different sectors are deprived even from their basic human rights. In one hand many of the countries in the world are reluctant to ratify various conventions of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and UN and in another hand the implementation of existing national and international laws in many countries is very poor. As a result of more than six decades of struggle June 16, 2011 was the historical day to the domestic workers with the adoption of ILO Convention 189—the Domestic Workers Convention. This Convention recognizes domestic workers as workers, with rights that are equal to those of all other workers regardless of citizenship or legal status. Now it is time for us and for our collective for the ratification of ILO convention 189. Migrant Forum in Asia (MFA) Nepal (WOREC Nepal, PNCC, Youth Action Nepal and Pourakhi) is committed to advocate for the strengthening of social security of the Nepalese workers particularly to the Gulf region. The right to social security must be extended to both domestic and migrant workers. The Governments in this region must begin to respect the rights of all workers. Realization this, MFA Nepal have been advocating for the Migrants workers rights linking with the human rights framework. In the context of Nepal, every day 1000-1500 people are going abroad to seek employment. Escalating food prices and cost of living to the main destination of Nepalese workers in gulf countries and other destination countries like Malaysia it made impossible for many wage earners to live a decent life. Similarly, the exploitative sponsorship system commonly known as Kafala system is another tools using for exploitation and human rights violation of workers. We strongly urge to the Government of Nepal to ratify the minimum set wages to the migrant workers and take effective measures to end the impacts of sponsorship on its citizen. Finally, we hope that this year’s observation of the International Workers’ Day will strengthen workers to continue our struggle for a better world. Let us work together and move to the stronger unity of migrant worker's right. We reaffirm our commitment to protect and promote the rights of migrant workers and We call on governments to ratify ILO Domestic Workers Convention (C189) and Convention on Rights of Migrant Workers and their Family Members (1990) In solidarity, Baburam Gautam WOREC Nepal Bishnu B.
