International Migrants Day - 18th December 2010

Today, 18th December, marks the 20th anniversary year since the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Migrant Workers and their Families by the UN general assembly. Many events have been organized at both the central and the district level.


In Kathmandu a colorful, much participated and successful rally has taken place, starting from the Administration Office and ending in Baneshwor with a mass gathering. The participants included representatives from various agencies, Trade Unions, health professionals, media, NGOs, INGOs, civil society, migrant workers, enterpreneurs, all expressing their different views and opinions.Speeches has been given by the Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Transport Managemet, Mr.Dinesh Hari Adhikari, Ganesh Gurung, member of the National Planning Commission, stressing the key role of the ratification of the Migrant Workers Convention for Nepal.


There was also a stall exhibition, where various organizations working on migration, including WOREC, PNCC and Youth Action, have disseminated information and collected signatures for the ratification  of the Migrant Workers Convention .
