Nirmala had no desire to get married. But, when the groom's family didn't ask for a dowry, she was under pressure to get married. Eventually, she agreed to marry the man who already had the first wife at home. After a month of getting married, her husband started to physically and mentally abuse her. Ultimately, Nirmala left her abusive husband. Today, Nirmala has enrolled herself in an 18th-month-long farming course conducted by WOREC. "I want to work and stand on my own feet. This opportunity has helped me become financially empowered," said Nirmala.
