Relief Distribution Amid the Pandemic

As COVID-19 continues to spread, many communities across the country have been hard hit by the virus. The outbreak has continued to strain resources, shuttering businesses and leaving millions without jobs. In such a situation, WOREC has taken the lead role to reach out to the most affected communities to provide humanitarian assistance during the lockdown and prohibitory orders to support the most affected population by Covid-19. The support works have started in different parts of the country in coordination with civil societies and local government.

In response to the Covid-19 crisis, WOREC, with the support of AEIN, distributed food items and sanitary pads to the 169 households in Bisdeutar and Jholunge ward number 10 of Sindupalchowk district on June 18, 2021. The food items contained a 25 kg rice pack, lentils, soyabean oil, mixed pulse, salt and sattu.

On June 23 2021, WOREC, in coordination with Udayapur Rapid Response Team, distributed food items to the nine households in Udayapurgadhi-7, Udayapur. The food items contained rice, salt, oil, lentils, beans, soap and detergent.  

Similarly, as a part of the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) prevention, mitigation and response during the pandemic, on May 13, WOREC, with the support of UN Women, provided hygiene materials along with food aids to the 11 GBV survivors residing in WOREC’s safe houses located in Sindhuli, Lalitpur, Okhaldhunga, Kathmandu and Sindhupalchowk. The hygiene materials consist of sanitary napkins, hand sanitiser, oximeter, PPE and surgical mask. Along with that, rice, sugar, salt, oil and lentil were listed in the food items.   

Likewise, on May 20, WOREC, with the support of UNFPA provided hygiene kits to the staff to prevent Covid-19 in 5 safe house facilities for women and girls. The safe house facilities at Okhaldhunga, Katari, Dailekh, Surkhet and Jumla received oximeter, infrared thermometer, PPE set, gumboots, medical mask, disposable cap, disposable shoe cover and face shield.

WOREC, in coordination with municipalities and with the support of AEIN, distributed relief packages to 300 women and of ward number 1 and 2 of Banphikot rural municipality, ward number 8 of Musikot municipality and ward number 3, 4 and 5 of Triveni municipality of Rukum district. 

A weeklong relief distribution program, which started from June 27 to July 2, 2021, aimed to provide relief materials consisting of rice, pulse, gram, oil and salt to the female conflict survivors, pregnant and lactating women, disabled women, single women, and marginalized women. Along with that, dignity kits consisting of sanitary pad, innerwear, towel, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, detergent, soap, lotion, nail cutter, comb, etc., were also distributed.

In a similar account, on June 14, WOREC, with the support of the Tarangini Foundation, provided cash support of ten thousand rupees to ten marginalized women who were struggling financially amid a pandemic in Musikot municipality of Rukum district.
