21 Dec 2021

WOREC has been working closely and in collaboration with CBOs and networks of women human rights defenders (WHRDs) to protect and promote Human Rights and Prevention and respond to GBV for sustainable peace and community development. At the same time, WOREC is committed to strengthening the capacity of CBOs by enhancing their leadership quality through different trainings and workshops. In this context, WOREC organized a five-day training on feminist documentation and advocacy for CBOs members, WHRDs, and WOREC’s staff from Dang, Udayapur, and Morang districts. The training program took place from 5th October to 9th October 2021 at Feminist Resource Centre in WOREC Udayapur.

In training, the participants were oriented on different topics such as Sex and Gender, Harmful Traditional Practices, Patriarchy, Feminism, Violence, its types and consequences, VAW in public spaces, Legal Provision on Violence against women, findings sharing of policy review of VAW in public space, survivor-centric approach, documentation from feminist approach, advocacy, and communication campaign. At the same time, different sessions were facilitated by Rukshana Kapali, LGBTIQ+ rights activist Roshani Poudyal, advocate. Sabita Pokharel: feminist activist, along with Sunita Mainali, Elisha Shrestha, Goma Bhandari, Sushma Chhinal, and Prabha Poudyal

Achievements:

  • Feminist Knowledge produced from the experience of individual’s experience
  • Peer learning: there was no hierarchy between participants and facilitators, which helped boost self-esteem and identity.
  • Legal Knowledge about VAW in public space
  • The joint work plan of WOREC and CBOs

  • Roshani Poudyal, an advocate: “Gender neutral, inadequate, scattered, and ambiguous legal provision, irresponsible and gender insensitive legal system, insensitivity among law implementing bodies, normalization of VAW in public spaces, devaluation of survivor’s experience during justice delivery process and patriarchal mindset have been creating obstacles to address violence against women in both public and private space. Hence, integrated law with a feminist perspective, gender-responsive justice delivery, clear and concrete strategy, and work plan are needed to create safe and dignified public space for diverse groups of women.”

  • One of the participants from Udayapur: “This training has helped me widen my Knowledge of feminist documentation. I came to know that there is an inter-relation between documentation and advocacy. Documentation of individual experience and cases creates feminist Knowledge and information, and access to information for women and minorities enhances bargaining power in every form of power relation. This creates strong tools for advocacy."
