Twelve people died and 56 families of the Majhi settlement in Indrawati Rural Municipality-11 were displaced after the devastating earthquake and its powerful aftershocks rocked the nation in 2015. After nearly four years of staying in flimsy huts, the displaced families on Friday returned home following the construction of an integrated settlement by the Women’s Rehabilitation Centre (Worec Nepal) with the financial assistance of AEIN Luxembourg.

“Our settlement has become beautiful again. I am beyond happy. Thanks to those who helped rebuild our settlement,” said Manu Majhi, 106, as she entered her house.

The settlement was handed over to the 56 displaced families amidst a function on Friday. Representatives of Worec Nepal and AEIN Luxembourg, former law minister Sher Bahadur Tamang and chief of the local unit Bansh Lal Tamang jointly handed over the houses to the families. The local people heartily welcomed the guests and expressed their gratitude for the help.

“The 2015 earthquake had destroyed our settlement. We never thought that we would get to live in our own houses again,” said Dev Chandra Majhi.

According to Luvaraj Neupane, executive director of Worec Nepal, it cost around Rs 500,000 to construct one block.

“We also plan to launch various income generating programmes in the settlement,” said Neupane.
